Supplements for Overall Health and Aging
By Gary Miceli
Have you ever gone to a store and gone down the vitamin aisle?
It seems that sometimes there are more than 50 types of supplements.
Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Zinc, etc.
And you might have wondered, “Should I be taking any of these for my overall health?” or “Will any of these supplements help me age better?”
Well, before you take any supplements, ALWAYS consult with your doctor.
But based on scientific research, these are five that have a lot of benefits (these are not in any particular order):
- Fish Oil – Fish oil is from the tissues of oily fish, such as salmon, sardines, and trout. And as a supplement, it may provide great benefits. This includes that it may support heart health. How? Well, the evidence shows that it can help lower cholesterol, help lower triglycerides, help reduce blood pressure and help prevent the formation of plaques that harden arteries. And studies show that people who eat a lot of fish have much lower rates of heart disease.
- Tumeric and Curcumin – Have you ever used the spice “Tumeric”? Well, curcumin is an active component of the Turmeric spice. And as a supplement, it may provide great benefits. The benefits include that curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory compound. And turmeric can increase the antioxidant capacity of the body. Oxidative damage is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind aging and many diseases. It involves free radicals, highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons. Free radicals tend to react with important organic substances, such as fatty acids, proteins, or DNA. Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure.
- Vitamin K – This vitamin is found in animal foods and fermented foods (like cheese and beef liver) and is also produced by gut bacteria. And as a supplement, it may provide great benefits, specifically, the K2 vitamin. The benefits include that it may help improve dental health, may help improve bone health and it may help protect against certain types of cancer.

- CoQ10 – This is a substance that helps convert food into energy. CoQ10 is found in almost every cell in the body, and as a supplement, it may provide great benefits. CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants fight damaging particles in the body known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Scientists believe free radicals contribute to the aging process, as well as a number of health problems (including heart disease and cancer). Antioxidants, such as CoQ10, can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

- Vitamin D – If you have gone to the beach, you know about this vitamin. This vitamin is produced endogenously when ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Also, this is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in a few foods. And as a supplement, it may provide great benefits. The benefits include that Vitamin D may fight disease, may regulate mood, reduce depression, and it might support weight loss
